Hello, I went on STD after a medical discharge due to PTSD. I was approved for benefits and I tried to work in two different jobs, the first full time and unable to do that I tried a part time job, the total time in the jobs once my benefits started was 5 months. I claimed all income. I had to stop all work as I was unable to continue due to my condition so stopped and remain on STD. My question is have I made things more complicated for myself when I reach the 2 year mark and apply for LTD?
Your STD program is 2 years long? I’ve only heard of STD plans up to 6 months, and then you move to LTD? In my case my LTD kicked in after 3 months on STD.
Yes. 2 years STD then transition to LTD. That said, definition changes and will no doubt require new medical info.
Wow, 2 years of STD…that’s a first for me to hear. Does the employer pay you for the 2 years of STD before moving to LTD with the insurance company? Just so I am clear, you are 2 years on STD, then 2 years own occupation LTD, then move to any occupation LTD?
No, I don’t think you’ve complicated things by trying to get back to work. If anything, it makes your case to go onto LTD that much stronger.
Canada Life covers the STD. At the 2 year mark the definition of disabled changes at which time I will have to get new forms completed by the docs and then get approved for LTD which covers until 65. That’s all I really know about the process.
I am guessing that you work for a large employer that self-insures and gets Canada Life to manage it for them?
That is correct. Was concerned my efforts to try a different career may come back to bite me.
