My friend has worked for 30+ years. Last year she went on STD then was switched to LTD last Nov. She was just sent CPP disability forms and was adviced to fill them out. She mentioned there was info about backpay of benefits etc. She is unsure if she should fill out. Will filling out basically allow her employer to let her go? She is worried about losing money, losing her job and therefore all her benefits. Why would Manulife send her out forms after such a short time on LTD, 9 months. Any other info you could advise would be great. She does not go online, but is frantic about her situation.
Hi, it’s going to be ok, the back benefits is because if you don’t apply as soon as you qualify then CPP can pay you for up to I think 11 months that she missed. She should apply for the back benefits back to her date of disability. CPP and employment are separate things and one doesn’t affect the other. Manulife sending the forms early likely means that their medical assessment is that she is unlikely to improve. Usually CPPD benefits get deducted from LTD payments so they want to save themselves the money. Some employers will terminate soon after disability, some will keep you on until retirement age. Hopefully hers is one of the latter…
Mine kept me on the books for 8 years.
She may or may not lose extended health if the employer lets her go.
Public employers seem more likely to just “medically-retire” you.
