I recently received a refusal for my CPP Disability application and I’m now preparing for an appeal. I requested my ATIP notes and found that one of the reasons for the denial was a referral to an ENT specialist and an assumption of possible future improvement.
But here’s the reality: I’ve been waiting for that ENT appointment for over two years. The referral wasn’t even marked as a priority because my doctor doesn’t believe it will lead to any significant improvement. It feels like the adjustor was just looking for any excuse to deny my claim.
Has anyone faced something similar? I’d really appreciate your insights or advice.
I think the CPP disabilty medical adjuticators are all over the map. I had multiple upcoming treatments/procedures that could help me listed in my medical file and yet they still approved my application.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It really shows how inconsistent the decisions can be. In my case, I had only one specialist referral (ENT), and even that wasn’t flagged as a priority (on wait list for 2 years now). Still, they used it as a reason to deny my application, assuming “future improvement.”
It’s frustrating to see others with more procedures still get approved while my case, which has been stable and disabling for years, gets refused over a non-urgent appointment. Definitely feels like a lottery sometimes. They admitted my case is severe but not prolonged
I’ve seen this quite often. What I would recommend as part of your appeal is to get your family doctor to address this point directly. Have the family doctor discuss the purpose of the referral and what if any impact it could reasonably have on your capacity for work.

Actually his referral is Just a trial. A reason for the health issues I have which is severe Migrain is not known and we tried everything and mostly this will not help …but at the end it is the healthcare system which cause this delay not me …waiting for 2 years on the waitlist
I think you should do exactly what David Brannen has suggested. Ask your doctor to write a letter explaining that this referral is a long shot and why he may not be confident that this will lead to substantial improvement, and even with some improvement, your capacity for work may not significantly change. It’s a frustrating situation for sure, just try this out.
