You need a psych doctor unless you live in some remote area where there are no psychiatrists available. Then your doctor will have to treat you.

But if there are psychiatrists available in your area you better get one. If you are sick you need treatment. Some psychiatrists may not prescribe medications depending on your condition. What they do is combination of talk therapy and, if needed, meds. Mostly you will spent time talking about different things that bother you. Psychoanalysis of some sort.

Your insurer wants to make sure you are getting all the treatment that you need to get better. Their goal is to follow your treatments and to the point when you feel better to go back to work.
