STD before Maternity Leave [BC]
I’m currently on benefits paid STD (not EI). My claim has been approved until the end of July but I am due next week. I know I have to apply for EI as of the day the baby is born but I have 2 questions for anyone that’s gone through something similar:

Can I continue to receive STD payments instead of EI? It’s higher $ and I know this will offset EI but I’d rather get more $. Manulife is saying the claim will end if I apply for EI but my case manager is never confident in her answers.

When applying for EI for “last day worked” would this become the day before the day of birth or when I went onto STD leave?
I think there is something called EI-Sickness but that doesn’t answer your STD question.
Why are you applying for EI?
Continue to get STD until July.
Are you thinking about EI for after July?
I don’t know anything about Maternity Leave but don’t employers pay you while you’re on that?
I DON’T think you should apply for EI because that severs the relationship with the insurance company and ends your claim.
I don’t think you can get EI if you quit the job so I would check that before you do anything.

Be very very careful.
If your are still medically disabled from doing your job after the birth of your child I would stay on STD, and not bother applying for EI Maternity Benefits. Depending on your prognosis you may need to have your STD end date extended or move to LTD.
