New unrelated health issue during same claim period

I’m on STD for physical and mental symptoms due to burnout. I am expected to return to work early next month but have another unrelated medical issue that just started and my specialist is saying I am unfit to work for 4 weeks. My specialist has sent my family doctor a letter with an explanation. I will be talking to my family doctor and ask for a doctor’s note extending my leave.
My question is:
How do insurance companies handle new medical issues that are unrelated to the initial claim? Will they just add the new issue to my current claim since it’s within the same period?

Just looking for some insight so I can be prepared,
Thanks

It might depend on how long you have been off.
I don’t know how much the insurance company will hassle you.
Some companies are good, some are bad.

I’ve been off work for 3 months.

Ask your insurer.
I’d expect to reapply with new claim.

Thanks jammer…will see what my insurance company says. I’m hoping it won’t be too complicated but at least now I won’t be shocked if they do require a new claim to be started.

The first rule is to see what your specific LTD policy or plan says about this type of situation. But generally speaking, as long as a person has a continuous period of total disability, then new medical conditions and sources of disability are included with the existing STD or LTD claim. However, you need to look at your plan or policy because it may be different in your specific situation. Some policies will exclude certain medical conditions. Or the policy may require you to file a new application for new medical conditions that arise during same period of disability.
