If one was laid off on STD and as such on an elimination period, I know that one could sue for wrongful dismissal but let’s leave that sidebar on the…erm, side.
Is the insurer off the hook then if the elimination period isn’t completed due to a layoff?

You need to get a copy of your master policy to get a 100% accurate answer. But yes, from the majority of the policies I’ve ever read you would still have your LTD insurance as the onset of your disabilty happened while you were an employee. Just make sure you follow all the required LTD application deadlines as your HR likely won’t be of much help to you anymore.
Things are much simpler when your insurance company is the administrator of your STD and LTD, hopefully that is the case for you.
I hope you got a nice fat severance package from your employer.

Edited: I think my policy says that no, indeed I have to be insured for 17 weeks, but my employer would still have to continue coverage by law until the end of the notice period which would ‘save’ me, I guess?
