Canadian dental care plan

I have a tooth ache I want to get the Canadian dental care plan but it says it’s only for people with disability tax credit for 2023. I will try to get the tax credit the next time I see my psychiatrist will I be able to get the Canadian dental care plan ?

In order to qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, you would need a valid DTC certificate, so I believe your specialist would have to confirm that your disability meets the DTC eligibility requirements which includes having a disability that is expected to last 12 months.

Examples of limitations are listed on the government website below. If you are on this forum navigating DTC by yourself, I honestly think it is questionable whether you meet the eligibility criteria for mental functions.

  • Adaptive functioning
    • Adapting to change, expressing basic needs, going into the community
    • Initiating common simple transactions
    • Carrying out basic hygiene or self-care activities
    • Performing necessary everyday tasks
  • Attention
    • Showing awareness of danger and risks to personal safety
    • Demonstrating basic impulse control
  • Concentration
    • Being able to focus on a simple task for any length of time
    • Understanding and recalling information (short term)
  • Goal-setting
    • Making and carrying out simple plans
    • Initiating everyday tasks
  • Judgment
    • Choosing clothing appropriate for the weather
    • Making decisions about your own treatment and welfare
    • Recognizing risks of being taken advantage of by others
    • Understanding consequences of your actions or decisions
  • Memory
    • Remembering basic personal information (such as date of birth and address)
    • Remembering things that are important and of interest
    • Remembering simple instructions
  • Perception of reality
    • Showing an accurate understanding of reality
    • Separating reality from delusions and hallucinations
  • Problem-solving
    • Identifying everyday problems
    • Carrying out solutions to simple problems
  • Regulating behaviour and emotions
    • Behaving appropriately for the situation
    • Showing appropriate emotional responses for the situation
    • Controlling mood to prevent risk of harm to self or others
  • Verbal and non-verbal comprehension
    • Understanding and responding to non-verbal information or cues
    • Understanding and responding to verbal information

Having said that, I would be interested to hear from anyone that has a valid DTC certificate for mental health that is still able to take care of themselves, participate in this forum etc. My understanding is that for DTC, you basically would need a caretaker to accompany you to places due to confusion, inability to pay at the cash register etc

Of course not. If you look at the criteria to be eligible for DTC under mental functions, and also watch the video on the government website of the example of who would or would not qualify, you’ll see that it is pretty severe, and would include problems such as confusion, not being able to pay for groceries at the store etc.
