Have been receiving LTD pension for the past 1.5 years, LTD company is now asking me to apply for CPPD, which is fine. They are also asking me to apply for a Disability pension from HOOPP, I am currently receiving free accrual until age 65.
What I’m wondering is, am I obligated to apply for a HOOPP Disability pension? I don’t really want to since it would be much less than I would receive at age 65.
I doubt you have to apply for HOOP but it depends on how the benefit plan is worded.
For example I am obligated to apply for any pension that is related to my disability.
I don’t know anything about HOOP but check if it has a special disability provision. Sometimes if you take a pension early for medical reasons you can still get a full pension at normal retirement age.
I would never do that in my case. The disability pension would directly offset LTD payments. Also, pension accrual would stop.
I doubt HOOPP would be much different but each case is uniique.

Check the wording of your LTD Plan. Many of the LTD plans will make it mandatory to apply for the HOOPP disability benefit after a certain number of years.
