What is the general experience for union members who have to pay union dues while on LTD? While on LTD, there is no employer payroll, so do you have to pay your union dues directly to your union?

It may vary from person to person as everybody’s collective agreement is different. When I was on short term sick leave through the employer I was paying union dues and my LTD premium contributions as our LTD is employee funded. Once I got approved for LTD through the insurer I was no longer required to pay union dues nor LTD premiums. My best advice is to check what your collective agreement says or reach out to your union rep and they will definitely let you know.

like you group, my group has also waived union dues and group benefits premium payments for people on LTD, but now are requesting a direct payment of union dues if you are away on LTD.
